Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
(PG) 141 mins

For some reason, I can never resist a ‘Harry Potter’ preview. I see the preview, and I think to myself, ‘I want to see this film. Who cares that I didn’t like the first ones.’ So, as you can imagine, I eventually caved and rented the third installment. And, at the very least, I can say that I recommend it. Gone is the squeaky clean image of the children, and in its place was a little bit of a darker film. As a result, the film carries a lot more weight than the first two, and I was actually able to care about what happened to Harry and his friends.

But I did have a couple issues with the ending of the film. An innocent man is locked away in the end, and the kids fly up, wave their magic wands and voila! He’s free. Don’t you think that in a wizard prison, it’d be a little more difficult to break someone out of jail? Anyone can just get a broom, fly up there and say ‘lockum offum’ and they’ll be free. Not much of a prison.

My other gripe has to do with time travel. (Spoiler alert) Harry is saved by his future self. But there’s a problem with that. If he’s saved by his future self, that would mean that he would have had to have survived the event in order to be alive in the future to go back in time. It’s a paradox! Argh. J.K. Rowling doesn’t know anything about writing.
